Administrative Guidelines for Hiring Assistants
These guidelines pertain to classified part-time assistants positions (17 hours maximum). Please see the Hiring Procedures Checklist.
- Call the Department of Human Resources for a list of applicants. If you inform us of the position you have open, we can prepare a list of applicants who indicated specific jobs they would be willing to do. We will email or fax the list directly to you as soon as possible. You may not interview someone that has not submitted their application to Human Resources first.
- Please confirm salary information through an H.R. Administrator.
- The principal or director should interview candidates, asking appropriate job-related questions. Each applicant must be asked the same questions.
- The principal or director must check references and select the candidate best qualified for the position. All assistant positions are considered "at will." The new employee should be informed that the position may or may not be available the following school year.
- The employee must complete all new hire paperwork in Human Resources before they begin working. Once all paperwork is completed the employee will be given a "blue sheet" to return to the school. The employee may not begin working until the school has received a copy of the "blue sheet."
- Submit a Hire/Change form (Classified), along with an employee reference check form, immediately to the Department of Human Resources for approval.
- Send letters of regret to candidates not selected.
- Employees working in a classroom setting at any title I school must be highly qualified. Each principal must ensure that the applicant meets the highly qualified standard before interviewing. The school must also have the applicant complete a highly qualified form, keep a copy for their records, and send the original with the employee to Human Resources to complete the paperwork process.
NOTE: An applicant is not considered hired, and MAY NOT WORK, until the hire form has been received and approved by the Department of Human Resources.
